Our Day Will ComeThis year is going to be tough because there are a lot of really amazing “event” films playing. I’ve got a handful of must-see festival picks but I’ll try to sprinkle in a few off-beat films. Cannes was lacklustre this year but TIFF looks pretty solid!
-
01 Our Day Will Come
This year’s film festival is all about Vincent Cassel.
-
02 Heartbeats
I missed this in Cannes and I’m really curious about wunderkind Xavier Dolan since I missed J’ai tué ma mère. My Canadian pick this year.
-
03 Cold Fish
Japanese true crime story about a tropical fish dealer responsible for over forty murders directed by Sion Sono. Yes.
-
04 Brighton Rock
This movie sounds awesome. Sam Riley from Control is an up and coming thug in 60s UK who starts dating a witness to one of his crimes.
-
05 Three
New film by Tom Tykwer. Anything he does is a must see.
-
06 Confessions
Japanese revenge movie about a teacher who leaves her job because two of her students killed her daughter.
-
07 You Are Here
Cool, offbeat, Canadian film featuring Tracey Wright once again. This is high on the list.
-
08 A Horrible Way to Die
This has one of the best titles of the festival. Intriguing plot about an escaped serial killer and a young woman in rehab.
-
09 Miral
New film from Julian Schnabel.
-
10 I Saw the Devil
Another film with a very tantalizing title. Anything with hard-boiled thriller in the description excites me.
-
11 Essential Killing
Vincent Gallo plays a “terrorist” captured, tortured and transported to a snowy landscape where he escapes and must survive.
-
12 Black Swan
Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder, Barbara Hershey, Darren Aronofsky. Enough said. Probably my event film of TIFF10.
-
13 Sensation
Serial masturbation leads to business opportunities in this Irish film. All kinds of awesomeness.
-
14 Aftershock
The story and cultural resonance of this film make it an intriguing choice. The most successful Chinese movie of all time?
-
15 ATTENBERG
Crumbling architecture in an abandoned town makes it hard to love. New Greek cinema is intriguing, as Dogtooth proved last year.
-
16 I'm Still Here
Gonna be out in theatres, this film is still really intriguing and could very well be best enjoyed at a film festival.
-
17 Incendies
Hot off the success of Polytechnique, Denis Villeneuve is back with a new film about a family’s journey of discovery to the Middle East.
-
18 Easy Money
Another Swedish thriller to add to the pile. This one has three intertwined plot lines about various underworld dealings that collide.
-
19 Bad Faith
Definitely curious about this paranoid Swedish story of an unreliable protagonist hunting a serial killer.
-
20 Womb
Eva Green is in this science fiction film about a woman who gives birth to the clone of her dead lover. Weird, but could be good.
-
21 Balada Triste (The Last Circus)
Clowns battle to the death over a woman in an allegory for the Spanish Civil War. This has to be good.
-
22 Buried
This looks awesome, although it’ll be in theatres soon enough thanks to Ryan Reynolds. US truck driver in Iraq gets buried alive.
-
23 Norwegian Wood
Based on a Murakami book I’ve never read, seems like it could be good.
-
24 Erotic Man
Jorgen Leth’s autobiographical essay film about the nature of the erotic. Could be completely esoteric or completely awesome, Leth has power
-
25 The Housemaid
Remake of a Korean classic, this promises to be sexy, if nothing else.
-
26 Meek's Cutoff
Kelly Reichart’s new period film, families lost on the Oregon Trail encounter a Native American who forces them to reassess everything.
-
27 Carancho
Film noir-style plot set in the Argentinian underworld. Ambulance chaser of sorts seeks redemption with an emergency room doctor.
-
28 Cirkus Columbia
From the director of No Man’s Land, this film has one of the funniest short descriptions in the festival.
-
29 Armadillo
Seems like a really compelling documentary about Dutch soldiers fighting in Afghanistan. Looks visually striking for a doc.
-
30 L' Amour Fou
Yves St. Laurent, his lover and their giant art collection. Definitely on the shortlist of docs to see this year.
-
31 Break Up Club
The combination of scripted drama and documentary makes this a curious film, but intriguing because who doesn’t want to relive first love?
-
32 Film Socialism
Missed this at Cannes, sounds like another Godard essay film that will either inspire or exasperate.
-
33 Cave of Forgotten Dreams
Herzog in 3D! Documentary on some of the earliest cave drawings, this movie ironically seems focused on the tech required to make it.
-
34 The Big Picture
A French film about a man who gives up his seemingly perfect life to follow his dream of being a photographer, at the expense of all else.
-
35 Another Year
Mike Leigh and Jim Broadbent. Now that I live in the UK this might give me some insight, but will most likely simply entertain.
-
36 As If I Am Not There
Story of survival and redemption in the former Yugoslavia.
-
37 The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu
The techniques of montage and framing seem core to this “documentary”, stylistically intriguing.
-
38 Barney's Version
Canadian tale based on the novel by Mordecai Richler, this will no doubt be in theatres soon enough thanks to the cast. Sounds decent
-
39 Beautiful Boy
A great cast and an interesting and sad look at the aftermath of a school killing from the parent’s perspective, this film looks promising.
-
40 Behind Blue Skies
This movie sounds like a lot of fun, set in the 70s, summer jobs, sexual awakening, scandalous crimes, what’s not to look forward to?
-
41 Blessed Events
This movie has slow burn written all over it. I’m hoping for a compelling twist ending. A story about discomfort with unexpected happiness.
-
42 Daydream Nation
Most likely out in theatres soon, this sounds like a fun little film.
-
43 Deep in the Woods
Benoit Jacquot’s film about a feral man who seduces the daughter of a country doctor sounds kinda crazy, but that could be good.
-
44 Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame
I love detective movies so this could be great, but I’m holding on to my enthusiasm for now.
-
45 The Illusionist
From the director of Triplettes of Belleville, based on an unproduced script by Jacques Tati, this has great pedigree.
-
46 Machete Maidens Unleashed!
A documentary about the making of B movies, sounds like a lot of fun.
-
47 Passion Play
This film looks cool but I might just have to wait until it’s released in theatres.
-
48 Trigger
Bruce McDonald is usually good, but I’m not sure how this film suits me. Features the late Tracey Wright and Molly Parker.
-
49 Vanishing on 7th Street
Could be my Midnight Madness pick this year, all star cast, will be out in theatres shortly, I’m sure.
-
50 A Screaming Man
This played at Cannes and a lot of people said it was great. I missed it so I’ll have to try to catch it in Toronto.
-
51 Submarine
Sounds like a lot of fun.
-
52 The Trip
Anything with Steve Coogan in it is good for a laugh.
